The biggest advantage to buying a used car in the UK is the same advantage as it is anywhere; a second hand car is cheaper. The sluggish economy has forced many people to look at used cars in a whole new light. Before, it was okay to get a second hand car for your new teenage driver who was going to get a few dings ion it anyway or as a second car to use occasionally for errands. Now people are making second hand cars the primary family car that they drive everyday to work.
If your main or only car is a used car, make sure you only look at used cars that offer a guarantee, comprehensive mechanical and electrical component failure cover, and roadside assistance. These used to be standard protections on a new car only but if you are making a second hand car your everyday car, it has to be reliable.
Even consumers who can afford a new car are buying second hand cars so they can get more car for their money. For the same price as a tiny, new economy car, a person can buy a used, large, plush car. Once that tiny new car is driven off the lot, it becomes a used car anyway, so why not start out with a large comfortable second hand car. Let someone else that that 40% depreciation in the first year so you can snap up a bargain.
The new car just isn’t the prestige symbol it once was. Economy is in style and since they are so many newer used cars to choose from, you can find any car, from a family minibus to a two-seater sports car, second hand. There’s no reason to get a new car because you really want a specific model. The Internet makes it easy to find the exact car you’re looking for second hand.
